Get The Most Out Of The School Holidays!

While the kids look forward to school holidays as though all their Christmases have come at once, for parents it can be a little stressful. There’s so much to plan, and it can get expensive. So we thought we’d make it that little bit easier, with some fun and educational school holiday events and specials, that won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

Cool Yule is on until 17 July for lots of frosty fun. Step onto the Cool Yule Ice Rink presented by Nova 96.9 to go for a twirl, and take part in our Learn To Skate classes from 9am-10am daily to get the basics downpat. Or drop by at 12:45 daily to check out Stars On Ice, and be wowed by the grace and skill of top figure skaters for a little inspiration. Then soar above it all on the Cool Yule Ferris Wheel at Harbourside, for a view of the harbour like no other.

Play in the snow in the heart of Sydney at our Snow Pit, so the kids can show off their snowman-making skills. But watch out for snowballs! Plus, when you buy a ticket to the ice rink or the snow pit, you’ll also get great admission deals from the Australian National Maritime Museum and SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium. Find out more here!

Delve into the Frozen Forest in Darling Quarter to enter a stunning winter wonderland, and enjoy a spell-binding interactive storytelling session at Frosty Fiction and Fun, presented by Monkey Baa Theatre Company and Darling Quarter from 1pm-4pm Thursdays to Sundays. And don’t forget our $10 Cool Yule Parking Special – pre-book your online via Book A Bay, enter the promo code ‘YULE’ and get $10 parking at Darling Quarter Car Park. Head to Book A Bay‘s website for more details.

Head to the Chinese Garden of Friendship until 15 July for some Traditional Toy Making. Between 11am and 1pm Monday to Friday during the school holidays, kids can make their own Chinese rattle drum, dragonfly toy and tangram puzzle to take home, and it’s free with garden entry ($6 for adults, $3 for kids, or $15 for a family of four).

There is so much to see and do at the Australian National Maritime Museum, where the program is chock-a-block with school holiday fun. Jeannie Baker‘s latest picture book, Circle, comes to life in a remarkable travelling exhibition, exploring the incredible unbroken migration of bar-tailed godwits from their breeding grounds in Alaska to Australia and New Zealand. In the Circle Reading Room, kids can dive into the collected works of this celebrated author and artist. Kids can sit back and relax with a book; collage their own bar-tailed godwit bird and have it displayed in a collaborative installation; enjoy watching award-winning animations of Where The Forest Meets The Sea and The Story of Rosy Dock; and learn about Jeannie’s artistic process. Go on an adventure and hunt for treasure through the museum by torchlight with hilarious character guides in the Family Torchlight Tour. Don’t forget to pack a torch! Or fly through the galaxy, explore our spectacular solar system, and investigate how we use the night sky to navigate our way across the ocean in the Pop-Up Planetarium, a 360-degree presenter-led planetarium experience.

Kids can make their own TV show segment at TV Presenting: Time Travellers, joining filmmaker Nicola Walkerden to script, film, present and direct a creative TV segment inspired by the Australian National Maritime Museum‘s current exhibitions. Delve into the history of seafarers and celestial navigation all around the world at Stars and Songlines, where the little ones can create their own tick, tock and twinkle prints, make glow-in-the-dark stickers, design their own sculptural ship or an imaginary navigational instrument, plus enjoy dress-ups and interactive games! And if all that excitement has you feeling a little peckish, ANMM has a $10 Cool Yule kids’ meal to help give the youngsters the energy to play and learn.

Monkey Baa Theatre Company at Lend Lease Darling Quarter Theatre will help kids’ imaginations run wild, with the totally spontaneous and totally improvised Random Musical from 12-16 July. Audience members write down their name and favourite words and a brand new musical is created, inspiring every twist and turn of the show. Kids may just find themselves playing characters, creatures, sound effects or objects, putting them right at the heart of the action.

Rally the troops and prepare for some laser tag battles at M9 Laser Skirmish at Harbourside. Become lords of the lanes at Kingpin Bowling, or head to 9D Action Cinema to experience stimulating and exciting 3D movies with surround sound, ‘active motion’ luxury seats, and dramatic effects such as rain, fog, lightning, wind, snow, touch, feel and more!

Become an ocean explorer at SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, and go on an underwater Finding Dory adventure! An interactive quiz trail will entertain the kids as they learn about conservation and protecting Dory’s home, as well as the easy things they can do to help preserve our reefs and coastlines. They can also dive into the interactive playroom, with loads of fantastic Finding Dory activities and plush toys waiting to be discovered!

And if you want to check out the critically acclaimed Disney•Pixar film, head to IMAX Sydney to see it in amazing 3D! You can also settle in and watch The Legend of Tarzan 3D, Ghostbusters 3D (from 14 July) and Star Trek Beyond 3D (from 21 July).

All this fun is bound to make you hungry, so sweet teeth can enjoy two ice cream sundae baskets from Andersen’s of Denmark for only $18, or two regular premium Belgian hot chocolates for $8! And for something a little more savoury, the whole family can take part in Hard Rock Cafe‘s World Burger Tour, to rock your tastebuds with a menu of legendary burgers from around the world!

So let us take out the guess work of school holiday planning. Come and join us for the best school holidays yet!
