Having A Good Time On The Goods Line

Where was once a disused rail corridor is now a public space to be proud of – a green, leafy, and energised civic spine that is open to all, promoting culture, creativity and community within the heart of the city. Stretching from Railway Square to Darling Harbour and incorporating places like the University of Technology and the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences, The Goods Line is an multi award-winning, traffic-free thoroughfare full of mixed spaces for all to share and enjoy, bringing the vision of a more connected, sustainable and innovative Sydney one step closer to reality.

A Very Good History

The Goods Line is the site of an old rail corridor, part of a busy freight rail system that first opened in 1855 and ran from Dulwich Hill on the Bankstown line to Rozelle and Darling Harbour Yards, finishing at Sydney Yard (Central Station), with major rail yards at Rozelle and Darling Harbour. It was part of the first rail line built in New South Wales, and is a wonderful remnant of Darling Harbour’s industrial past, with shipyards and wharves previously taking pride of place along our shores and a myriad of factories and warehouses in the surrounding streets.

All The Good Stuff

The Goods Line is the perfect place to chill out – whether you’re making weekend plans, taking a study break, or just looking for a little bit of workday solitude at lunchtime.

Pack a yummy picnic and set up shop at the dining tables, or settle in on the grassy greens to bask in the sunshine. Students can seclude themselves in the study pods among the trees to make writing that thesis feel just a little bit nicer. There are table tennis tables to share a game with mates, and a children’s water play area with a sand pit shaded by helpful fig trees, perfect for a relaxing family day out.

And on Sunday 11 September, there will be an open day of fun on The Goods Line, The Really Goods Line Day, celebrating its great urban design and use of public space with music, performances, entertainment, talks, games, demonstrations, fitness, food, drinks and more! Visit sydneydesign.com.au for a schedule of fun things to entice you to experience the space in a whole new way.

So treat yourself to something good, and come explore The Goods Line.
